Our Mission

Who we are, why we built this, and where we're headed

Our Story

The MD & VA Farm Directory was created out of a simple frustration: finding local farms in Maryland and Virginia was harder than it should be. Information was scattered across dozens of websites, social media pages, and outdated lists. We wanted a single, reliable place where anyone could discover farms near them — whether they were looking for fresh produce, a weekend outing, or a place to pick their own strawberries.

What started as a personal project quickly grew into a comprehensive directory of over 1,800 farms across both states. Every listing includes verified contact information, directions, ratings, and real reviews from visitors. Our goal is to make it as easy as possible for families, food lovers, and curious explorers to connect with the farms in their backyard.

Our Mission

Our mission is simple: make it effortless for people in Maryland and Virginia to find and support local farms. We believe that when communities are connected to the farms around them, everyone benefits — families eat better, farmers earn a fair living, and local economies grow stronger.

We are driven by the belief that local food systems are essential to healthy communities. Industrial agriculture has its place, but there is something irreplaceable about knowing where your food comes from, shaking the hand of the person who grew it, and feeding your family produce that was picked that morning instead of shipped across the country.

Why Local Farms Matter

Maryland and Virginia are uniquely positioned for local agriculture. The climate supports a wide variety of crops and livestock. The population density means there are millions of potential customers within a short drive of working farms. And the tradition of farming runs deep in both states, with operations that have been family-owned for generations.

Local farms provide fresher, more nutritious produce. They support the local economy by keeping money circulating within the region. They preserve open land and green spaces. And they offer experiences — from hayrides to u-pick fields — that connect people with where their food actually comes from.

What We Do

We research, compile, and maintain detailed farm listings so you do not have to. Each farm in our directory has its own dedicated profile page with name, address, phone number, website, Google Maps directions, visitor ratings, and hours of operation. We regularly update our database using the Google Places API to ensure accuracy and add new farms as we discover them.

Our search and filter tools let you narrow down results by state, sort by rating or name, and search by farm name or city. We also curate a selection of Featured Farms — hand-picked operations that stand out for their quality, visitor experience, or unique offerings.

Our Commitments

Accuracy: Every listing in our directory is researched and verified. We include real ratings, working phone numbers, and up-to-date addresses. When information changes, we update it.

Accessibility: The directory is free to use for everyone. You do not need an account, a subscription, or an app. Just search, find a farm, and go.

Completeness: We aim to list every farm in Maryland and Virginia, from large commercial operations to small family homesteads. If a farm is open to the public in any capacity, it belongs in our directory.

Support for farmers: We are here to drive customers to farms, not to compete with them. Our featured listings and partnership programs are all designed to help farms reach more people and grow their business.

Looking Ahead

We are constantly working to improve the directory. Recent additions include dedicated profile pages for every farm, a claim-your-listing system for farm owners, and enriched data with hours, phone numbers, and business status pulled directly from Google. Up next, we are focused on farm category filters, seasonal event guides, and expanded partnership programs with farm owners across both states. If you have ideas for how we can make this resource better, we want to hear them — visit our Contact page and let us know.
